Hi,

I made a mistake by burning an audio CD at 8x when the CDR max speed is 4x. Strange enuf, the CD is still playable in all drives. Anyone knows why this is possible?

Thanks..

CDR's dont care, most every current CDR is up to snuf for 8x burn.

I think they pretty much just speed rate them for price point now.

CDRW's are the ones that wont burn past rated speed

yup...a lot of companies just label the same drives differently...

hence the enormous amount of cd-r hacks out there...i just hacked my rw7120a ricoh to an mp7125a w/ justlink...

more extreme hacks are the lite-on 8x/4x to a 12x/10x, etc...

check www.cdrinfo.com - there's probably a hack somewhere (often firmware) that updates your drive to a faster version....also, i know some companies put out firmware adding features like burnproof, etc.

bacillus: I'm using a Sony CRX-140E 8/4/32 drive. Using the bundled Sony CD Maker Professional proggie to burn ;)

Gunbuster: You mean I can simply purchase a supposedly 2x CD recordable disc to burn at 8x even?? What actually differentiates the max speed at what the disc can be burnt at?

nortexoid: Uhh... I didn't hack my drive. It's the media which got accidentally "hacked" ;)

powaking: That's interesting... How many have you tried so far? What about CDRs that are of other speeds?

you can burn your CDR media at any speed you want, but whether the final product is readable is up in the air. It depends on both media and the burner. I can burn my 4x rated Taiyo Yuden media at 12x with no problem, and it can be read on all the CDROMs I've encountered, but if I try to burn 12x with my black CDRs(only rated at 8x), some drives will not be able to read it (certain sectors are weak I think)

ugh: some drives were able to *OC* because it's actually a crippled version of a faster drive, the only example I can remember is the Yamaha 2216/4416.

You guys are not understanding what he posted. He said he burnt a 4x rated cd on a 8x cdrw, and it burnt ok. He was wondering why it burnt at 8x because the media is rated at only 4x.

yeah, he said he burned his 4x rated cdr disc at 8x recording speed on his 8x4x32 cdrw drive. I've had no problems burning my 4x imation cdr discs at 12x speed on my Plextor 12/10/32S drive. My 12x imation cdr's also burn fine at 12x speed.:) My Memorex 8x rated cdr's also burned fine at 12x speed.

Smbu: Wow!! 4x CDR media at 12x?!?!? That's amazing!! Then what in the world are the speed ratings in CDR media for anyway??

"Then what in the world are the speed ratings in CDR media for anyway??"

I don't know, but I remember a few months ago when I picked up my 12x rated 50 packs of Imation cdr's from Officemax, they also had some Fuji 50 pack cdr's. On the Fuji cdr's there was a little sticker that covered up the rating of 12x speed. The little sticker covering it up said 16x speed.:) so I really don't think the rated speed of cdr's matter that much.

cdrw disc ratings however do matter. I can only use 4x rated cdrw discs at 4x recording speed, even though my drive is a 10x rewritable drive. The 10x rated cdrw disc that came with my Plextor 12/10/32S drive works find at 10x speeds, though.

simple.
companies make cdrs. They rate it at the highest rating drives available at that time. In a month , higher speed drives become available. Companies relable the same cdrs for higher speed.
If they don't that doesn't mean it won't work at higher speeds. Some 4X cdrs I bought a year ago work fine at 12X. If I get a 16X burner, I think they should work fine at 16X too.
