*argh* just threw out another coaster. This is annoying. I have a tdk 24x writer with buffer protection blah blah blah. Nonetheless this Imation media (rated for 48x) seems to be producing about 25% coaster material. It starts reving up loud at some point and screwing up. What a PITA!

Anyway, what's up with this? Is there a cheap'ish brand that doesn't suck as much as imation?

It's probably not so much the name brand, but the underlying manufacturer of your discs. Myself, like many other members here, prefer the Fujifilm cd-r's as they're usually made by Taiyo Yuden. I've never made a coaster unless I had caused a system crash. Supposedly, Ritek's are good as well, but I can't vouch for them personally.
If you want to check the manufacturer of your cd-r's using Nero, hold down <Shift> while clicking on [Medium Info] (I think that's the command at least).

I use generic stuff and get about a 2-4% coaster rate so something else may be up there.

I use memorex brand CDs, and not once have I had a coaster. They always come out good. Decently inexpensive, too.

Same here. Used 100+ Memorex and only 1 coaster, but that was my fault.

Come to think of it, I actually DID have one problem with a memorex CD, and that was the time one of them broke inside my burner. I don't know why, but it was writing one moment and the next I hear a crack, open tray, pick out 3 chunks of CD :Q

I use generic stuff and get about a 0% coaster, Imation media are made by a good Mfr. and are not junk
I have used a few hundred Imation media CDRW and my Lite-on 52X will Burn 16X Media at 52X.
are you Burning on the Fly if so lower the burn speed
what APIS are you using (I like Verison 4.60)

I have a Yamaha CRWF1 and have been getting bad music CD burns. If I leave the burn program set to "Optimal" or "Max" I will get gaps/skips in the tracks. This has happened to me with Memorex and Sony media. But if I limit the burn speed to 16x I get only good CDs. So is this an issue with the media or the drive? Also, this is when burning from music files on my PC, I've not tried to test it CD to CD.

I'm also a generic CD-R user, and the only times I get coasters are the times I still insist on using the computer for too much while it's trying to burn a CD, and it locks up. Heck, even then sometimes the CD will finish writing.
Well, yes, there was one exception - maybe 2 years ago, I had a 10pk of Pacific Digital CD-R's. After about the first 50-100MB, the writing software would report an error and eject the disc. Don't know if I had a bad pack, or if Pacific Digital stuff just sucked. That was on a Yamaha 8x8x24 drive; it didn't matter what speed I used either.
