CDR / CDRW hook up

Hi,
I need some suggestions please.
I have these drives to hook up.
Current setup:
Hard drive - primary master (C,D,E )
DVD - primary slave ( F )
Asus 50x CD - secondary master ( G )
Plextor 16x - secondary slave ( H )
Can I put Asus CD as primary slave.?(to make it "F&quot
Would this affect gaming performance?

if i'm not mistaken, putting your cd-rom on the same controller as your hd, would make any cd installation or file transfer a lot slower. in general, you want to keep things that interact with each other a lot on different controllers.

Yeah, each IDE channel gets two devices, but it can only access one at a time.

I can't tell a difference though, it's not worth worrying about I think.

what OS are you using... With NT4 or 2000 you can easily change drive letters through disk management

drive letters can be changed in 98 too, for CDROM's.

What are you burning Cds from? If you are only burning from the hard drive and the DVD drive "on-the-fly" and you install programs from the CD-ROM, then your current setup is ideal. If you'd like to burn from the CD-ROM "on-the-fly", then switch the DVD and CD-ROM positions. As for drive lettering, your OS can help you set that any way you want.

Thanks for the replies,
I am running win98SE and burn from hard drive.
Would like to go hard drive and CD on primary,but not sure if this can
cause problems with games.
Problem #2,do not know how to change drive letters.

there shouldn't be big gaming issues having the CD-ROM and hard drive on the same IDE channel. I have my DVD-ROM on the same channel as my hard drive and it runs fine. Changing the drive letters is pretty easy. Right click on My Computer and select properties and then select the second tab on the top of the window that comes up. Open up the CD-ROM branch and select the device you want to change and click properties. The drive letter assignments are close to the bottom. Set them both to the letter you want to use and say okay. Reboot and the assignments s/b changed.

Depending on your Mobo, you can get an ATA 66/100 card (about $20-$30). Put your Hard Drive(s) on the Card. That leaves you with better margin to configure the CDs.
