Will it work?

I do not need to rely on it...but it'd be nice to be able to call home once or twice.

But if it's a big hassle...I wouldn't. I've heard Europe doesn't really use TDMA...

TDMA? Nobody in the US really uses that much anymore either. You using some local only carrier or something? GSM is all over Europe, very little CDMA, but mostly GSM.

Sorry, CDMA. I think that's what it's called. Bell Mobility in Canada...not GSM.

Ah...makes more sense. Still, you won't find very much coverage in Europe, there's a bit, but it's mostly GSM. There's a few phones that do both, they're more expensive, but if you'll be travelling overseas a lot it might be worth investing. If it's a one time thing, then get on eBay, buy a cheap used GSM phone (unlocked one), and then over in Europe get a prepaid SIM card.

Code Divison Multiple Access is not a technology that the Europeans use.

Global System Moblility is the player there.

Don't bother with CDMA.

it wont work.

buy a cheap GSM phone.. make sure it has 900 and 1800Mhz (euro frequencies), 850 and 1900 optional (north america).
Buy a pay-as-you go type deal SIM when you get there. (or on ebay).

Yeah, GSM is the only way. The Bell phone is stuck on the Bell network. Can't be unlocked, not easily anyway, AFAIK.
