CD writing program that automatically spans discs?

I'm planning to move a large set of files and directories onto CDR, but since some of these directories are pretty deeply nested, I don't really want to manually pick the files to see that they'll fit onto a disc. Are there any windows programs that'll let you pick the entire file set you want to archive, automatically spans the set across discs (also optimally uses the disc space?), then just burns discs as you insert them? Heck, if it builds a text catalog too, I'd be happier than a pig in mud! :D

Ideally, I'd want to be able to read any disc from the set and copy back individual files when I need them. I used one of the earlier versions of Norton Ghost and it wrote a closed, proprietary image to the disc -- has this changed in recent versions?

Thanks in advance for any suggestions you can throw my way. :)
