I'm going to buy myself either one, I've always known plextor to be the best in this compartment for a long time and someone (well quite a few recommended lite-on).
So which should I be getting the plextor 48x24x48 or lite-on 48x12x48 and why?

Thanks

A friend has just got a lite-on CDRW drive and it is noisy as hell. Prolly does the job fine though as they have been given the thumbs up by a number of AT members.

Plextors are very nice. I'd opine to say most folks here at AT (where all the knowledgeable people hang out ;)) have a Lite-On. I have the 401248 and it absolutely rocks. It's under a hundred bucks at this point...you'd be foolish to get anything else. :)

Lite-Ons are by far the best choice...

Just as reliable as plextor for the most part...

$60 for the 40x version which EASILY runs at 48x :D

:)

Good Luck in whatever you choice is...

I should get a lite-on then?
But why is plextor at a resonable price and lite-on's are dirt cheap? (something just keeps telling me, you get what you pay for... there's bound to be something up with that, no?)

Got both! :)

I have a 24x Plextor and a 40x Lite-on (now 48x with the Lite-on firmware update). I have to say that the Plextor was one of my favs for the longest time (had a 12x, then a 24x) but I now use the Lite-on quite a bit more - not only because of the speed, but because it can do all the copy protections while the Plex can do them, but you have to use those discs IN the Plextor. Lite-on is quite a bit cheaper than the Plextor (got my Lite-on 40x for $50 AR).

If it helps, I have a Plextor drive and I love it. BUT......If I had to buy right now, it would be Lite on.

The price difference makes a difference. Why pay more to get similar performance?

I'd say the Lite-ons are probably not made to last as long as a Plextor will.

That said, I don't think that too many people keep their CD-R/RWs long enough for them to go kaput. You will upgrade it before it breaks.

i have the plextor 40x12x40a drive and it's great.

i've never played with the lite-on but it was being considered before i chose the plextor. If i were to buy another drive, i'd try my hand at the lite-on.

I'm a fan of plextor, but for the money i really think the Lite-on is worth it. I'm thinking of getting one soon to upgrade my 24x plextor.
