CD writer program for Ubuntu Linux

Does anyone know if there is a CD writer program (one that WORKS) for Ubuntu Linux that has the same DRAG-TO-DISC functionality that the Roxio Easy CD Creator program has ???

I have asked on the Ubuntu community site and apparently the DRAG-TO-DISC function is foreign to most people !!! They only seem to know about BURNING ISO images & files to CDR's.

Thanks.

AFAIK there are no packet writing programs except for *maybe* nero for linux. I am not sure if they have done that yet. Very few people actually use packet writing for burning discs because it is slow and does not necessarily create a disc that can be read on other machines. BTW, did you dearch this forum? This issue has been gone over a number of times in the past couple months. 🙂

Thanks for your reply.

I don't know why people always seem to think that this process is slow. They must have NOT ever used Roxio's DRAG-TO-DISC function. I think they would be greatly suprised if they did. As far as CD writing is concerned it is the best thing since sliced white bread.

And yes, the CD's created using Roxio's DRAG-TO-DISC, will work on other systems.

Yes, I did do a search but maybe I was using the wrong search parameters.

I really want to give Linux a try, but if I have to wind up buying all of the things that I can do in Windows, I am not sure that the fact that Linux is free is much of an advantage.

Maybe, I will look into Nero for Linux.

Thanks again.

Nero is not expensive, I think it is under $20.00. Free if you have a legal copy of nero. But, again I do not know if they offer a packet writer. I have used packet writing on Windows (at work, I don't use windows at home) and was less than impressed.

The problem is also one of thought. Many of us don't like having abstractions like that. CD media is write-once. We associate drag&drop with normal read/write media. For write-once, it is proper to open a special window to put things into that are planned to be written, then write them to it.

Check out K3b. It's a KDE application. K3b is condisured the premier cd burning tool for Linux by many. It can handle data cdroms, dvds, music cds, and rewritables.

I like using Amarok with it they have tight integration.. at least in the versions that I use. I just drag and drop songs to k3b and burn them to the cdrom as music cdrom for friends that want mix cds.

The big problem with packet writing is that it doesn't work well across implementations. You might have no problem with the discs yourself but other people won't be able to mount because of subtle differences in the drive firmware or even the software's packet writing implementation. I believe it's supposed to be more standardized with DVDs, but I don't have a real reason to use it.

Mind you, I don't know, but I am wondering if what you are saying is not based on old techno info. Have you tried the latest versions 7 & 8 of Roxio's Easy CD Creator program. They are a vast improvement over their older versions.

I have used the DRAG-TO-DISC function (what you'all refer to as packet writing) on a number of different machines and/or drive combinations and have had NO problems with the CD's be used in different situations.

I really don't think many people are aware of the easy of use and the speed that this gives you in writing files, etc. to CD-RW media. Writing a fairly large file to a CD-RW using this function is almost instantaneous.

Thanks.

Maybe it has been fixed, I don't really know since I've never had much of a use for it. But I will say that writing to the disc is no faster with the packet writing method and is probably a slight bit slower since it'll have to a little extra work to find somewhere to write the data compared to writing a steady stream from start to end when you write a normal ISO filesystem. Although it may seem to be instantaneous because of caching and writing in the background done by Roxio.
