cd writer problems

my pal his this 8x4x32 hp writer. writes data cds and audio cds fine too. only has a problem when it comes to imation discs.. it'll write data on to them fine.. but quits writing audio cds halfway thru the cd. he uses adaptec easy cd creator to write. it writes audio cds on other cd-r brands fine. whats wrong with the discs or the writer?
 
Does Easy CD Creator give him a measage as to why it stopped? (ie Buffer Under Run Error)
Has he tried slowing down the burn?
Is DMA enabled on the CDR/W drive?
 
shall ask him about any error messages.
hes burning the audios at 4x.. even tried at 2x.. doesnt help.
dont know whether DMA is enables.. will check that out too.. i'll do that from system properties-->device manager right?
 
After that it depends on what OS you have. The DMA settings will either be associated with the drive or with the controller.

EDIT:
You may want to check and see if the manufacturer has a bios upgrade to fix the problem.
