Cd writer done for?

Lately my Lite-on drive has been unable to burn discs. The drive will spin up and then stop and then I hear a sound like the laser head is moving. This repeats itself over and over, and once in a while it will actually burn the disc, but usually it won't write any data to the disc and fails. I just did a fresh install of windows, and it didn't help at all. Is my drive junk?

Did you try a different blank CDR? I have seen problems similar in recent history where changing to a different media fixed the issue. Did the burner software trow you an error?

I'll try some new discs later this week. Would a whole stack of CD-Rs go bad all at once? Another symptom I forgot to mention is that while the drive is thrashing around, I can't open other applications unless I lower nero.exe priority from high to normal. Another thing, if I cancel the burn while its thrashing, the drive will continue on for a while until it stops. Weirdness

I'n not saying it is definitely the disks but it is a possibility. Before buying an entire stack of new cdrs I would buy one or two of a different brand and see if the symptoms persist or not. Have you used these same CDRs before with this same burner? Did you buy a new stack and then have issues?
