Need help from all you super gurus since I have more drink coasters than I need

CUV4X motherboard 133; 633 celeron processor; 128MB RAM; 20GB h/d; 32x CD ROM; HP 1x and 2x cd writer.
Problem just started a few months ago where the CD ROM will only burn at 1x speed. If on 2x receive the following error
"T0100: I/O error (06/C5/00) - Write error - buffer underrun occurred
T0100: I/O error (06/C5/00) - Write error - buffer underrun occurred
T7118: TrackWriter error - Command retry failed
D0100: I/O error (05/2C/00) - Command error - commands not issued in sequence"

Error help states that the writer runs out of data to write which gives errors. This happens backing up files from hard drive to CD. I have quite a fast system so would not have thought that speed would have been a factor here.

Have deleted and reinstalled writer; deleted and reinstalled CD creator 3.5, have tried CD creator 4. All with the same result. Have searched HP site for updated drivers to no avail.

just cause your system is fast doesn't mean you can't have a buffer underrun.

it would seem that your hard drive simply cannot supply info to the cdr fast enough. have you ever been able to write at 2x? if you have, then its probably not the hd, but somehow related.

try to defrag your drive, and close down all the useless program that's running while you are doing the backup. And if you have the space, building an ISO image first and burn it from the image might solve the problem.

How do you mean make an "ISO" image.

PS I have defragged, removed all programs that are no longer necessary.

berwick; what operating system are you using? If you are running wimME then I would try a different burning program. I have had nothing but problems with wimME and CD Creator<even at 1x:mad: Since switching to NTI CD Maker 2000 pro I have had no problems. Maybe if you can update to CD Creator 5.0 that might help or install the win2k updates. Good luck:)

ps: I have also used CDRWIN succesfully :) <only tried the freeware version though and that is limited to 1x>

Yeah, try updating your burning software, or switching to another one altogether. CDRWin is good, but I like Nero the best. It is very simple, yet very powerful.
I've been using Nero on a 2X2X24X HP burner (model # 7570i) for a year and a half, and HAVE NEVER GOTTEN A BAD BURN. Seriously.
What hard drive do you have?

Oh yeah, my burner model is 7570i. This drive is the same as the Sony Spressa CRX100e. I updated the firmware to the latest version of the Sony model, and can now burn at 4X without problems.
For info, try www.cdrinfo.com, and specifically go to their hardware oc sectoin.
This procedure is risky though, so do it at your own risk.

To everyone who kindly offered their suggestions I got the problem fixed. Remember that I could burn at 2x on CD-RW this makes no sense.

I purchased a CD-ROM cleaner kit and cleaned my writer twice. It is now burning at max. speed.
