try getting one that has burnproof if you can spare the extra money. a lot of the new ones have them already and their prices are getting low. :)

a cheap cd-writer and good performer would be LiteOn.
The 16X version is around $80.

I purchased the TDK VeloCD 24xwriter for only $149.95. I bought it because it was absolutely the cheapest and the fastest. And my mom used to work for the company as well. I did buy it retail, however. This wasn't a "special" price. I was surprised to find that it came with alot of extra stuff too, like a cd-marker pen, an instructional video, 2 writable disks, and 1 rewritable disk, manual disc eject tool, and good documentation, and of course the usual stuff, software, ide cable, etc.

With the TDK 24x drive available for $149, it is easily the best deal although I still prefer Plextor.
