CD-RW will not work with CD-ROM

I just bought a cheap Philips CD-RW, and I put it as the slave on IDE Channel 2. The master on that cable is a Delta 50x CD-ROM. It will not see the Philips CD-RW if the Delta CD-ROM is also plugged in to the cable, but if I unplug the cable from the Delta, the CD-RW drive is seen. I have tried this with the CD-RW as master, and slave, but the same thing happens either way. The only way that I can get both drives recognised, is by having only one plugged in when I start the computer, then plugging the other in after WinME is started.

It is on an Abit KT7A.

umm...You should not be "plugging" anything in or disconnecting anything while you PC is running.

Do you have both channels turned on in the BIOS?

I know that I should not do that, but I was trying to trouble-shoot. Channel 1 only has my Hard-Drive on it. Channel 2 has my CD-Rom as master, and CD-RW as slave. The channels are turned on in the BIOS, and it will only see the CD-Rom, though. I have it set to auto, where the 2nd Channel Slave settings are.

aside from giving you the lecture about not swapping ide devices while the system is running, here's what I'd say:

1) why not put the cdrw as a slave to the hdd?

2) if that's not an option for whatever reason, check the jumpers on the delta cdrom-it might be set as single drive as opposed to master-if I recall, there's a difference between having the jumper on the drive in the master position and not having a jumper on it (which i suspect will, in some (or all?) instances, default to single drive status)

hope that helps, now stop hot swapping!!!

I just got them both up and running, but only because I plugged in the Delta after the computer was in WinME. The Delta did not show up until after I restarted my computer. When I restarted, both drives showed up in their proper places in the BIOS, Device Manager, Explorer. This is what happened before. I thought that everything was fixed, so I turned off the computer, and reassembled the case. Then, when I restart, the CD-RW is not visible in the BIOS, Device Manager, Explorer. How can I cause WinME to keep the proper settings once they are attained? It will keep the settings if I do a restart, but if I turn off the power, it no longer has the CD-RW visible when I restart. What could be causing this? Thank you for any more help.

Delta jumper is set to master.
Philips jumper is set to slave.

Delta is D:
Philips is E:

They are both working perfectly now, I am just afraid to turn off the power, and lose the Philips. Has anyone had a similar problem?

I also would suggest that you set the Delta as slave to the hard drive and see if it will function there and set the Philips as master on the secondary channel and see if everything is detected in that formation. This setup will allow you to burn CDs on the fly from the Delta to the Philips. If all of the jumpers are set up as you say and the cables are being plugged in correctly, then I don't see why you are having these problems.
