CD-RW Problems

I simply want to burn a .bin file to a cd-r. Unfortunately my lite on 48-24-48 cdrw is acting up and i burn several new coasters. Because I have a large supply of blank cds it is easier for me just to keep trying and failing rather than upgrading my firmware or defragging my disk. So I put another blank cd into my burner and try again. It fails and I reboot. But to my dismay, it doesnt load windows after rebooting. You think I would have learned to fix the problem the first time, but I didn't and this is the second time this has happened in a month. I can still boot off a cd and access all my files on my boot drive, but windows will not load. I am wondering how burning a cd followed by a reboot in the middle of the process can make windows fail. I am relatively sure my hard drive is ok, because I was able to format and reload windows with no problems. I am also wondering if there is a way to repair windows without a fresh install.

This is what happens when I boot:
Everything seems to work and the windows loading screen comes up for a brief period followed by a black screen with blinking line.

I am running Windows 98 first edition(I know its old)

Is there anything I can do besides upgrading the cd-rw firmware to prevent this in the future?

It seems to me that while burning the burning software may have damaged some of the registry or system files. Boot Windows into safe mode by pressing F8 and choosing Safe mode from the menu. After you are in safe mode start a command prompt by going to start > RUN > COMMAND. After you are in the command prompt type the command "scanreg /restore" (without quotes) which will allow you to restore your registry to a previous state. If it gives you an error about not finding the command add a path statement to windows by typing "PATH C:\WINDOWS" c: is where the o/s is installed. After running that command a menu should appear that allow you to choose a registry from previous days. Pick one that has a date from a couple days before your problems started. Hope that helps.

OK, I had some other problems and ended up having to reinstall windows anyway.

I updated both nero and my cd-rw firmware to the latest versions and attempt to burn a cd.

Nero fails and goes into several errors followed by blue screens. I try again with the same results.
I am hoping this is just nero not cooperating with my comp. and not my cd-rw drive.
Are there any tools that tell you if you have a faulty drive?
