So, I am working with an HP Pavilion 6540C that is a few years old. Anyhow, the CD-RW drive (standard OEM fair) is having trouble, or at least causing some problems. It will sometimes read CDs, but when I try to burn (either with the Win XP built in burning software or Nero 5.5) it fails with an unexplained error. I looked on the blank CDs and there is no trace of burn marks, so it is failing before the laser hits the CD.
Also, when the drive is connected the computer will frequently lock up for a few minutes while acting like it is trying to access the CD-RW drive. It does this while it is booting (resulting in a boot time longer than 5 minutes), while Win XP is loading, and when ever I try to do something in Windows (like open a program).
I tried reinstalling the default Win XP drivers, but that didn't help. I couldn't find any specific drivers for this drive on HP's website... I haven't found any indications that this is a software problem (under the device manager all looks fine as well). Does this sound like a hardware problem or software? I'd love to know what you all think... thanks much!
