CD RW going crazy

My cd R/W drive has been going crazy lately. When I try to open it up to put a new cd in, it will continually move in and out, and in and out. Varying speeds, and length of exit/entry. Eventually after 5 minutes of playing with it, it will finally slide back in and read the CD, but it is becoming a pain in the ass. So the question is....

Is my hardware broken?

OR

Is this some kind of virus?

OR

Am I way off ?
