I'm trying to decide which combo drive to get with my (future) SB51G. Newegg the following:
Toshiba 16/10/40/12 (write/rewrite/read/DVD) - $86
Samsung 32/10/40/12 - $92
Plextor 20/10/40/12 - $132 + $6 s&h

The Toshiba's cheapest and looks nice, but it burns rather slow.
The Samsung looks like the best deal (good price, fast access times, and a 8MB cache - the others are 2MBs), but it's ugly.
The Plextor is a Plextor and is therefore cool, but it's expensive (since it's a Plextor).

From past experience, I know that Toshiba and Plextor drives are quiet, which I really like. Does anybody know how loud the Samsungs are? I can deal with its atrocious looks if it's at least quiet. Between the 8MB cache and 32x write speed, it looks like the best drive there. I just wish they had a plain bezel for it in white (the black bezel looks much better).

Thanks,

I have the Samsung, it is very quiet and been running like a champ for me so far. It was rated a best buy by CDRLabs so I tried it and like it so far. And it's not ugly to me!!!!!!!:D

Thanks for the response. I'll probably get the Samsung now (maybe you should get some commission).

As far as the "ugly" thing goes, I just like my drives plain and un-stylized (they blend in better). For instance, I like the drives I have: an old Toshiba 4.8x DVD, a Pioneer 106s, and a Plextor 24/10/40A. I've seen much worse than the Samsung, but I still don't like the printed logos on it. Engraved logos look much better.

Thanks again,
