CD-RW drive name...how to change?

I have a Plex 12/4/32 along with a Pioneer DVD-R. Plex used to display as 'CD-ROM' (I think) now it shows as 'JAZ'. I also have a external JAZ drive, which I had renamed 'JAZ'; still displays as such.

Adding other IDE drives, etc. the drive letters have moved around a lot. Never messed with reassigning them.

But how the heck do I fix the CD displaying as 'JAZ'? I've looked everywhere I can think of to try and rename it with no luck.

Running XP Pro.

I'm still trying to find out where I can access this, or how it changed in the first place? Any ideas?
Thanks.

Man i've looked all over the OS, and cannot find an option... i suspect it would be a registry key

have you tried uninstalling and physically removing all your removeable media drives, then putting them back in one by one and letting XP re-detect them?

I did remove and reinstall the drive in question, didn't help. I didn't remove ALL of them though.

I thought of the registry too, but I didn't have any luck in finding any keys that referenced the drive.:(

hrm, check out HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\HARDWARE\DEVICEMAP\Scsi

if you go down the tree a little bit more (like on my work machine here, after the \Scsi you go to:

\Scsi Port 1\Scsi Bus 0\Target ID 1\Logical Unit Id 0

there is an "Identifier" key.... mayhaps worth a shot changing it?

cool...I'll check it out now that I'm home. Someone else at work said it is probably a reg key. Thanks for the direction!:)

I've got the exact same problem here. If you figure it out, please post the solution. I'm running Win Me.

pretty easy to change stuff like this in the registry, open up regedit, go to search, and type in the name of whatever you want to change (in this case JAZ). once you find it, change it. not much to it :)

That's what I did and found the path.

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\microsoft\windows\current version\explorer\DriveIcons

Hell, I even added a letter and named my cd burner too!

Good find, but I can't find that registry entry in WinXP Pro. Do you have a link to where you found that information?

I found those entries in Win Me. My main rig runs XP Pro and I couldn't find them in there either. I added the entries but I can't find out if it worked until I reboot the machine. I'm downloading some crap on it now, so I'll report back tomorrow if it worked.

If it does work, I can probably send a screenshot of what I did.

Giblet, I can only change the name of hard drives and removable media. Not cd drives.

Anyway, here is a screenshot of what I added to the registry in XP Pro to rename my CD drive. Its now called "Bad Ass Burner".

Thanks cheetoden! That's what I needed...

[Edit] I couldn't find that listing in Regedit once I got home on my WinXP Pro system. Did you create it?

Sounds complicated. I merely open My Computer, right click on the drive in question and RENAME. It works for me. My CD/RW is named "Burner." :)

No need to reboot just pop a disc in and it will rename it to whatever disc is in and then eject the disc and it will display the name that is in the registry.
