First, the system in question:
Asus CUSL2-C, P3/866 OC'ed to 1001, 512 MB PC133 RAM, Cheetah X15, 18GB, Cheetah 10K, 18GB. Adaptec 29160 SCSI Board. Seagate Travan20 SCSI Tape Drive. Asus 50x CDROM, Toshiba SCSI DVD ROM, Plextor SCSI CD RW 12-10-32S. Win 2K Pro SP2.
Machine is incredibly stable and fast; not a bit of trouble with this board combination, at all, LOVEIT!
Yesterday, however, with no apparent cause, programs began opening slowly, or not at all. Shutdowns could not be done short of hitting the RESET button. I wondered about a virus, since Norton AV showed it was not autoloading. Went to Safe Mode, uninstalled NAV, and then I uninstalled MBM5 (since the flash screen of MBM5 was hanging). No change.
I was going to do a restore of the System State, and I removed the CD-RW (Verbatim Data Life Plus) that I usually leave in the Plextor drive for file copies, and as soon as I did that, everything worked fine. The only thing on the CDRW was my Microsoft Money 2001 file backup.
I had gotten to the point where I thought I was getting some side effect of that red worm thing, and was contemplating formatting and reinstalling everything. But, since I removed the CD RW all works well. Reinstalled NAV and MBM5.
Then I uninstalled the Plextor software, reinstalled Adaptec EZ Cd and Direct CD, upgraded these, put a different CDR into the Plextor, and the machine is back to its fine performance.
Clearly this was a CD-RW incident, and I wonder what caused it? Do these disks go bad in an unpredictable manner?
Appreciate ANY input. Thanks.
