Hello,

I just got a new computer with a Plexwriter CD-RW and I have a few questions:

1A. Why is it that I have ~65 MP3 files downloaded on my computer that equals roughly 300MBs of HHD space, but I can only put about 15 files on a 650MBs CD-R disk?

1A. Is there some conversion from MP3 to .wav (like uncompressing)?

2. Can I back-up all of my MP3 files on 1 CD-R disk (by leaving them in MP3 format or something)?

Thanks for you help.

MP3 files are MUCH smaller than the same file in .wav format. When you convert an MP3 to .wav to burn onto a CD, they are more than 10 times the file size.

If you're converting the mp3's to wav files and then storing those wav files on cd's, then you'll be able to fit less songs on the cd's since mp3's are more compressed than wav files.

You can just keep the mp3's in mp3 format when burning them onto the cd's that way, 300 megs of mp3 on the harddrive = 300 megs of mp3 on a cd. The only problem is that you won't be able to play those mp3's that are stored on the cd on a regular cd player. Though if you're willing to fork over the cash, they do now make cd players capable of playing cd's that have mp3's on them.

Yo Chris, what's up? How's that new system running?

I'm going to guess you are using either EZCD4 or Nero for buring these cd's. So when you create a cd you have 2 main options.

1)Backup your data to a cd.
2)Create an audio cd to listen to in a standard CD Player.

If you choose audio cd there is an automatic process that converts the mp3's into wav files. It has to be in CDDA format for the normal devices to read. So your 4MB mp3 is now about 40MB.

If you want to backup your mp3's in that format you have to create the cd as a data cd. That will leave them intact and you can play them using Winamp or whatever you choose.

That's the basic concept of it. Hope that helps. But more importantly, when you going to start playing CS with us?:)

Don't forget to check the quality of the mp3 when you download it as well. I find that 128 is the minimum for good cd quality music. I go for 192 if possible.

WOW, that was fast! I thought that was the process, but was not sure. I always try to download at 128, but no lower OR higher (because of 56k connection). I love making audio CD's of my favorite songs.

Topshelf,

My system is doing reall well! I had a defective Plexwriter, but Hypersonic quickly replaced. As far as performance, I could not be happier. Everything runs well and my system is rock stable, with the exception of ISP's software. I have to run Version 3.0 of Juno, because the 4.0 version would not recognize my modem. So, basically I am running a program that was designed for Win95 and it occassional will "NOT RESPOND", but everything else is fine.

UT runs VERY well and of course Q3 run SUPER fast. Are you playing any new games? What's up with your system?

if you're doing it in ezcd creator, it wont fit cause it automatically convertes it to .wav
