CD ROM what one?

Well,
I just bought a new computer. Top of the line. I got a 52x CD ROM bye LiteOn. I installed it and it doesn't work as well as it should be. I'm returning it to get something new. I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions on what I should get. All I want is a standard CD ROM drive. I would like to get something that is 56x. I was looking at the ones from AOpen and some of their reviews said there were some problems with their CD-956 (OEM). Here is New Egg's listing of it. LiteOn 52x 956. Anyway, I was just wondering what are some great CD ROM drives and where else are some good online places to shop. Thanks for your impute.

I just bought a Samsung 52X CDROM from newegg for $25 for my new PC. haven't tried it yet b/c my pc isn't built yet. I thought it was a good deal.

Is there a reason why you want a 56X CDROM? I dont think there will be much difference in spead between a 52X and 56X.

If you can get ahold of a Kenwood TrueX 52x or 72x drive, then I think you will be pleasantly surprised. They use multibeam technology and lower rotational speeds to be quiet, yet efficient. In fact, they are the only drives I have seen that come really close to reading at their rated speeds. However, they are hard to come by. I don't think they're even made anymore. You may have to order one on ebay.

Well,
I think it?s more of a status thing... It's just the way you say it, "I have a 56x CD ROM drive!!". It's all about status. Any other suggestions? About the Kenwood: I heard that they discontinued it because it was extremely temperamental. With two lasers it would have a very hard time reading a CD if there was the smallest scratch. I dunno, I guess a 52x would be good. I looked into the Samsung, I liked it. It got all good reviews too. If you guys have any more suggestions let me know, please. Thanks again.

Yoiu're going for status with a CD drive?
What makes you say that the liteon isn't performing as well as you thought?
Did you think that it would do DAE at 52x?
There is NO drive that will do that, if that's what you're looking for.
52x implies maximum burst read, it can't sustain any kind of transfer rates at that speed .. at least to my knowledge, someone correct me if I'm wrong.

That sounds like a bad reason to want a 56x. Who the hell is going to be impressed by the speed of your CDROM?

If a measely 52x is fast enough, and more importantly, impressive enough, then I'd recommend the ASUS 52x. I have 2 of them and have used another 2 or 3 in pc's I've built for others. The 2 I own are over 3 years old and run as fine now as they did when they were new.

I helped him build this computer so I can tell you what is wrong with his cd-rom. For installing windows it seemed ok. In windows it would act weird. It takes an abnormaly long time for a program to start up once a cd is put in the drive. It installs programs slow and makes an odd noise spinning down and up. It sounds like something continues to spin inside the drive. I've never heard anything like this so I doubt it is normal. It just doesn't seem right when installing something from that drive. When I used his 16x burner for installing things it had no problems. Anyway, I would say go with the asus drive, you guys agree?

AmdEmAll,

Could the problem possibly be:

A bad eide cable or connection?
CD-ROM drive's connector position on the eide cable?
What about CD-ROM drive jumper settings (master, slave, cable select)?
(I'm guessing)!

I am using the ASUS CD-S520 (52Xmax) with no problems so far.
Had some problems with the drive tray on a previous Sony CDU4821 OEM CD-ROM drive.

Yeah, unfortunately the Kenwood TrueX drives were burried in problems.

Also, be aware that the faster the CD drive the more likely you may come across the exploding CD problem. At least that was not one of Kenwood's problems as the drives spun slower. With my new system I stuck to 40X drives, because the exploding CDs seem to start at 48X. I don't think there are enough 44X drives around to be sure on whether they exhibit the problem or not.

i didn't really like those drives. they occasionally would not respond and cause my system to crash. i think samsung makes pretty nice and quiet cdrom drives. i would also recommend lite-on, but seems u have a bad experience with them. so i say samsung. i also had a few good teac cdrom drives too... dunno if they still make cdroms these days.

If he has a 16x DVD drive .. what's the point of a CD-ROM?
Bragging right?

In that case, get a DVD drive, forget CD-ROMs

They're hard to find because people got tired of their high failure rates.

My $.02 would be just get a cheaper LG 52x alot of people here have them (and/or LG burners) and think their great drives.

smp,
Maybe I worded that wrong. First of all, I didn't think that it would do DAE at 52. All I was saying was that I wanted a 56x because that is what I wanted. There is something about saying I have a 56x CD ROM drive. Sure there might not be any status in it, but it sounds better than saying you have a 52x, even if it averages out well below 52x.
However, I think I?m leaning toward the ASUS 52x that everyone is talking about. I haven't heard any negative things about it. I dunno...
