CD-ROM Spin down: Can it be stopped?

I notice that the my Asus 50x CD-ROM stops moving after a short time.
When I go into explorer, the drive spins up again so I can scan the
disk. Besides removing the current cd from the drive, is there any
way to keep the drive spinning? What I would prefer is to have the
drive run at maybe 4x, i.e. a slower speed. This assumes that the
data transfer rate is unimportant for the application I am in.
Right now, the drive sounds like a 747 taking off. :)

Thanks!

If you are running Win9X, try disabling Auto insert notification ..

I went to the Asus site today to look thru their bulletin boards, and
one poster stated that repeatedly pressing the play button on the CD-Rom will
slow it down. (assuming it is spinning).

I also found a program on the internet that will keep the
drive running, at http://www.ncf.carleton.ca/~aa571/

It is called "spindown" and runs in Win98. Unfortunately, I am using
Windows2000, so I am leery of installing it.

From my search, it seems that the spin down is done to conserve the life of the
cd-rom drives. However, with the price of these cd-rom drives at ~$40 or less,
I dont see the point.

There seem also to be some other cd-rom drives that have custom drivers that
allow the user to set a lot of options, including spin down. Asus has such a
driver for Ms-dos. Maybe I will buy a cd-rom drive with a custom driver for
windows 2000.

I'd leave that alone if I were you. The reason it spins down is because most of the time you are not accessing the CD drive and by doing so you extend the life of the motor. Your CD drive spins pretty fast(50x) and if it's constantly spinning at it's max speed then it will overheat and burn out sooner than you'd want.

I've used one, I think it's something simple like CDSpeed and you can set the CDRom speed. Yes it did only work in 98, but if that's what you're using it's beautiful
