cd-rom / shut down problem

So I reused a cdrom drive out of my old dell when I built my new comp. Everything is in good working order and I haven't had any major issues surprisingly (*knocks on wood*). One odd situation I'm facing is that on a shut down, the activity light on the cd rom stays on, and is preventing the comp from shutting down. It goes all the way past "windows is shutting down" screens and whatnot, and it gets to a blueish green screen (default XP background?) and hangs there. Disabling the drive fixes the problem. All drivers are current. I thought maybe a plug is in backwards, but they're keyed so at this point I really don't know what's going on. I'd like to stress that everything works the way it's supposed to outside of this. Any ideas? Thanks.

Interesting. I can't say I have an answer for you, but I do have some ideas you could explore...

Make sure the drive's jumper settings are correct. Remember, if you use "cable select" on one drive, you have to use it on them all.

Try a different IDE cable.

If all else fails, turn off the PC and recite these words: "Operor, lamia apparatus!" Then reboot.

In a way it's creeping me out ha. I guess I can just leave it disabled? Or turn it on / off as needed :( I have a DVD Rom drive also, I guess I can use that, but i like the idea of dual drives for some reason. I'm going to run a test by disabling the second drive and see what that turns up. Hopefully when I check this tomorrow it won't be on page 12 :(

Edit: No dice. It's definitely the cdrom drive. I'm quite confused.

Yeah, that's a really weird problem... Never heard of it before. I'd say just replace the CD-ROM drive, or just use the DVD-ROM drive.
