CD-ROM problems

My roommates CD-ROM quit working the other day, well kinda. It will still play music CDs but it wont do anything else( i.e. play/install games).
He also has a CD-RW and that works fine, but it will currently read and cant be used to play games either.
I'm a total newb so think from the ground up on this one as that stuff that may be obvious to some of you wont be to me.

Any ideas will be appreciated.
 
First rule with computers is allways chek the cables, open up the case as long as it doesnt viod the warentee and look for flat grey cables push them in make sure they are snug. Also maks sure the power is snug reboot and try them again. if this doesnt work post and let us know 🙂
