CD-Rom problems

I think I am having problems with a very old cd-rom drive (8x) that I installed in a low-budget computer I'm building. Anyway, it will sometimes have trouble reading a cd until I open the tray and re-close it. Are there any diagnostic programs I can use to test the thing?

it has trouble reading normal cds? or do u mean cd-rs? some older drives have problems with cd-rs. try cleaning the drive, maybe that will help.
