CD ROM problems in Win98

Well I went to burn some CD's on a new system and could not get CD creator to work although DirectCD worked fine. At first I got a ACM wrapper not found error. So I deinstalled Norton virtual CD to see if that might be interfering, No change. So then I reinstalled CD Creator and I got the windows protection fault. I proceded to Unistall CD Creator and the UNistaller locked up. The machine would reboot then give me the windows protection fault again. The only way to get it to boot properly was to unplug both my CD-RW and my old 10X CD. THe CD-RW was set up as a master on IDE2 and the CD was set up as a slave on IDE2. The CD-RW is an ACER 10x4x32. Does anybody have any suggestions.

Have you tried un-installing the programs in safe mode, then reinstalling in windows reverse of the original way you installed? As in,Direct cd installed first, versus second or vica versa... Believe it or not, stranger things happen, also may want to check if Dma is enabled for the drives or not.

Thanks I will try that. I never though of uninstalling from safe mode. I am just now learning the value of safe mode.

If it is a new system is the BIOS set for Plug n Play OS? This is important to do anything that involves IO without problems because if it is not set properly then the BIOS and WIn98 will fight for control and system lockups are the result. I overlooked this the first time on my new system and anytime I tried to use any software that accessed any CD drive the system would lock up in Win98. Also verify that your ASPI layer is valid.

Well I thought the CD-RW was working at one time. SInce I don't use CD-R and much as CD-RW I am not sure when the problem occured. Yes I think the MB is set for plug and play which is the default setting. I have not had a chance to trouble shoot the problem yet. Been running without a any CD drives for the past week.

Is this what creates the freezing effect when you eject a CD from your CD-ROM drive?

do you still have EZCD installed? and what version was it? maybe EZCD's driver is messing you up.. Do you have other CD burning software installed?
