CD-ROM or DVD-ROM for laptop?

The CD-ROM drive on my laptop is broken. I need to find a replacement. Where should I buy? Are the CD-ROM drives standardized so the manufacturer I buy from does not matter? I bought the laptop from outside of US, so it's hard to get support from the company.
