CD ROM on slave doesn't work well

I've been ripping a bunch of my cd's on my home computer in anticipation of the ipod I'm going to pick up in the next day or two. I'm using itunes. I have a brand new double layer DVD in the master position that seems to rip at around 22 to 25x. I was trying to put another cd in the second cd slot so that I could immediately start ripping another quickly. I had a cd burner in the slave position that was struggling to reach 5x and then the burns would be full of snap crackle and pop. Totally unacceptable rips.

I put in a new DVD burner into my office machine which is about a 3 month old Dell. So I took the 48x Samsung cd rom out of it and put it in the slave position of my home machine hoping I would be able to rip faster with it but same exact problem.

Whats the deal here? Thanks for all the help I get here.

Check the transfer mode settings for that IDE device.
Is it set to PIO or DMA mode?
