cd-rom not working

I have a 50x cd-rom drive on the other computer, and a few days ago it suddenly stopped working. win98 still sees the drive, but when I put a CD in, it doesn't recognize that there's a CD in the drive. if I try opening the cd-rom, I get the "device is not ready" error. I checked the cables, tried reinstalling the drives, but that didn't help. what else can I do?

Swap it out with a different drive. Then you will know if it is the drive itself or something else. Also:

1. Try a different IDE ribbon cable.

2. Make sure it is jumpered correctly as MA, SL or CS.

3. Connect a different Molex power connector (4 pin)
