CD-ROM Not Working During Installations

Can someone help me. My kids' computer will no longer install any software from the CD-ROM. Usually it gets from 10% to 50% installed and then seems to time out on a large file (though I am just assuming the files are large). The CD-ROM was the master on the second IDE and also had a DVD-ROM attached to it as a slave. Since the DVD worked perfectly and installation from it was no problem. I figured it was a bad CD-ROM. I replaced the CD-ROM with a new CD-RW and the same thing continues to happen. I assume the IDE is ok and the cable since the DVD works perfectly.

Also, I do realize that some games have this problem and they usually have fixes at their websites. However, this seems to be happening with every game we have tried to install, even ones that we installed before with no problem, uninstalled for one reason or another, and now wish to reinstall.

Any other ideas or suggestion would be greatly appreciated. I am stumped!

Check the jumpers on the two optical drives. You could have a conflict if both drives are set as "Master" or "Slave." You could also get a conflict if one is set fo "Cable Select" and the other is set as "Master" or "Slave," even if it is on the right connector.

Even if they are both set for "Cable Select," some motherboards don't handle that well with all IDE drives.

If any of the above is possible, try the brute force method of setting one drive as "Master" and one as "Slave." That forces the system to ignore the cable position.

Thanks I will try that. I also thought that perhaps although the ide cable itself may be fine (because the DVD drive works), maybe the CD-ROM connector itself is bad so I may also try changing the cable too if you suggestion does not work. I will check this when I get home. I think though when I set this all up initially, the CD-ROM was set as Master and the DVD as slave but I need to double-check that.

Most modern mobos do prefer you use Cables Select.

I would also recommend you replace the ribbon cable. They do get brittle.

Another possibility is that something is wrong with the DVD-Rom and it's interfering with whatever device is on the same ribbon. Have you tried the CD-Rom by itself?
