I've got an older cd rom in a new system that I upgraded, and the cd rom doesn't work with xp too well. It works sometimes, then not others, and when I boot up with no cd, the cd drive thinks theres a cd in there, really strange. is there anything i can do without replacing the drive? This is really annoying.

Do the following
1. Delete the driver and reboot. See it XP detects it again and it works, else
2. Select Update driver, manually update and install any Win2k compatible driver (after selecting ignore in the device driver signing options) else
3. Select Update driver, manually update, don't search I will manually install, uncheck the "show compatible hardware" and select the device closest matching your hardware or still better select the "Default CDROM"

Let me know if it works!

check to see if your ASPI layers were installed: I have done 3 XP installs in the last week, and in all instances, no ASPI layers installed on their own.
Go HERE to read up, and check ASPI.

Sweet! I tried reinstalling generic drivers, no go. Tried the forceaspi, worked like a charm! Saved me a bunch of headache.

Did you try updating your OS through the Windows update website? Make sure you update EVERYTHING.
