My cd rom just quit. Mechanically it's ok. The door opens and closes, but when I try to play a cd I get a pop up telling me to insert a cd. That's it. Nothing happens. I'm using a ME os. Any help would be appreciated.

A friend of mine is having this same problem in Windows 2000. When he restarts the CD-ROM shows up but after the computer is on for a while, the CD-ROM disappears. Mechanically, it's okay because it opens when he presses the eject button. This leads me to believe that there's something wrong with the OS, not the drive. Gonna bump this back up to the top for some suggestions. :)

Lots of things can make cdrom's disappear. Norton. Viruses. Corrupt OS's. It is hard to nail down alot of the time, the easy way to try to get it back is to delete the ide controller and let it redetect.

I took vieto's advice and bought a new unit. Works ok, but I would still like to find out how to get the other one to work.
John, how exactly do you "delete the ide controller and let it redetect"? You're talking to a noob w/a #2 pencil education. My computer knowledge comes from my 10 year old: "We learned that in kindergarten, Dad."

You do it in Device Manager. Right click My Computer and choose Properties. Highlight the IDE controller The one with the CD and right click it and choose remove. after you say yes again get out of there and reboot. It'll find the IDE controller and reinstall it along with the CD.

Pretty simple, when you know the moves. Thanks for that tip. It didn't work. The unit doesn't see the disc. Maybe it doesn't see drive D. Kinda know what that is.
I figure something crapped out inside the unit or my o.s. is corupted (many reasons for that :). My brother is mailing me the disc so I can reinstall. Hah, probably hear from me on that one, if I'm still able to get back online.
So, I'm just going to pull the cd rom, since it's blocking the airflow around my new unit, and not much else. Maybe stick an intake vent in there or something. Couldn't hurt. Discs always seem a little warm. Later.
