CD-ROM error... weird...

I'm trying to figure ot why my 48x CD-Rom is acting up...

I can play discs at will, but if I try to copy a CD using SpinDoctor (Adaptec EasyCD Creator), the program will copy only the first track of the CD, then the progress indicator will remain at 100%, and the machine hangs... the only way out is to reboot the computer.

Similarly, when I use the Creative Digital Audio Center to make MP3's from a CD "on the fly", the CD-ROM just stops sometimes at the end of track, and again, I have to reboot.

I tried to enable DMA, but after the mandatory restart, the DMA remains unchecked. Maybe it's not supported?

Any ideas?

This happens on my system from time to time using easycd creator too.

When it hangs on me, I hit the eject button on the cd drive and it wakes it back up. It continues to read and finishes the burn. Give it a try.

It does sound like DMA might not be supported, but is this always an on-the-fly issue, or do you encounter it if you create a temporary image file on your hard drive first and then burn from there also? The reason I ask is that some CD-ROMs don't like to read audio tracks very quickly. What I mean is, some can only rip CDs at like 4X instead of their rated 48X for data. This means it will play audio CDs no problem (only needs 1X for that) but it will not read them fast enough to burn at 8X or faster. Just a thought.

yeah, I'm trying to rip CD's on a specific location on a HD, to record them later... is there any way I can reduce the read speed?
