hey do you guys keep all three?

I have all three installed but question the need of my CD-Rom player. I can play my cd's on my dvd player, and burn with the burner. DVD player is 48x CDrom mode, and my standalone cd rom is 56X. but software can't be read over 16x or so, right?

Can anyone outline ANY benefits at all of having all three? if not, i will take out the cdrom to clean up my pc a bit.

Thanks

Ehm... no. I did back in 1998 when it was cool to see how many CD drives you had, but now it's lame. Not to mention added weight I have to drag up 4 flights of stairs every semester. I just run a DVD drive and a CDRW drive.

Nope. I just have a CDRW and DVD drive. No need for a CDrom when I have these two.

Not me. Just a DVD and a burner. CDROM's and DVD's have gotten so cheap ($25 and $45, respectively) that it's pointless to follow the old "don't wear out the expensive DVD" addage. I have a newish 16X Lite-On DVD in my main rig, but my Linux box has ONLY a 3 year old 10X Afreey DVD and my work computer has a 2.5 year old 12X Afreey DVD. Still putting along. :D

As for speed, the speed between a 48X and 56X is nada. You're not even talking about a sustained RPM (unless you're talking about a Mitsumi drive). You're only talking peak, and even then the disc doesn't READ at that speed... only seeks at that speed.

well, that answers my question. i was rackin my head to think of ANYTHING (i just installed dvd player as of 5 mins ago). but couldn't come up with any reason. now i don't play my cds on the burner cuz i heard it wears out the laser or something.

but a dvd-rom player is meant to read and not write, so i figure it wont' wear it out anymore than having to read a dvd.

I have a dvd burner and a cdrw. Mainly because it takes too damn long to burn cds with my dvd burner hehe. Might as well keep the 32x cdrw in.

SherEPunjab, I myself was wondering the same thing w/ a different twist, I currently have a seperate DVD-Rom drive and Burner and I want to add a DVD burner to my rig. I want to keep my current drives because they are both perfect for CCD.

I used to have two CD-RWs, since I was able to get CD-RW for a better price than a regular CD-ROM :)

Now I have CD-RW and DVD-RW...

nope, just a dvd and a burner for me... use the dvd for most reading but interestingly the burner is a better ripper.

i have a 16x dvd, 52x cdrw, a 40x ide, a 40x scsi, and a scsi 5disc changer. why? for fun, because i swap cds less, and when i rip people's cd collections it takes a lot less time.

but realistically? nah i don't need 'em all. but i do because i can. :)
