CD-ROM Drives Won't Work in WIN XP

The drives are recognized properly in BIOS and are there in My Computer, too, but when I insert a disk it is not seen by Windows XP home. I didn't install VIA 4-in-1 drivers or Adaptec software, and everything worked fine for a few months. Thank you , I am stumped.
