Is there a lot of difference in the various brands and models? Thinking of upgrading, what should I be looking for in a new one?
thanks in advance for your suggestions, and recomendations.

check out the buyers guides on the main pages, They have some advice about it.

Personally, I just try and get a name brand, that is not Creative.

Not Creative...
You know what's funny the only CDROM only I have that's more than a year old without dying is a 24X Mitsumi
So Mitsumi might be good.

I know people that have had a long lived Asus CDROM to, but I've never tried them.

Just grab a Pioneer 10x DVD/40x CD

I'd say Asus if you just want a basic CDRom though.

So far, all of the recomendations are good. I have had good luck with my Teac 40x. Very good transfer speeds, and is much more reliable with CD-Rs and CD-RWs than the kenwood (mine lasted a week before I returned it, as it was the only CD-ROM in my backup system). The Pioneer 10x/40x dvd drive was great, but it kind of noisy.

I looked at Plextor site, but all I saw was scsi. I'm after IDE.
I didn't realize the some drives don't like CDRs. thanks

Plextor makes great CDRoms....
You'll get huge companies that won't use anything but in their servers and/or CD towers.

But they don't make anything in IDE variety (well their CDRW of course, but no CDROM)

I cant believe when someone said Acer CD-ROMs are bad, I mean, some of the highest readability and some of the lowest prices, incredibly quiet, high performing, and they're very reliable.

NEC also make good CD-ROMs, so do Toshiba, Mitsumi and TEAC. Pioneer use to make excellent CD-ROMs, but now they only make DVD-ROMs. Sony, Panasonic, and Plextor, they're expensive and they arent really that much better than the cheaper ones. Asus CD-ROMs are really loud, but if that doesnt bother you, they should serve you well. Avoid Creative and Memorex CD-ROMs.

Toshiba and Teac are both very reliable.

The Kenwood TrueX 72x is fast as hell and quiet at the same time, but Kenwood has had some problems with the reliabílity of their previous TrueX drives....so I´m not sure how reliable the 72X is. :(

I like the Plextor and Pioneer Drives. Access time is important to me, more than overall speed.

LXi: I can't get Acer drives to read most of my CD-RW discs. There are a bunch of them failing at school. I find them to be very poor drives. Also, Panasonic drives are by no means expensive. They are very cheap.

Lombardaga: Creative uses other drives and relabels them. They used to use only Panasonic. Now they also use Hitachi, BTC, Samsung, JVC, and other junk. The only two out of that list that are ok are Panasonic and Hitachi.

Thanks for all your input, I guess I'll just keep what I have for now since it's working OK.
By the way it's an Acer 50x 10 months old.

Toshiba and Teac and good,

but heck, like you need to run your CD ROM as a Hard Drive, so what if it is a 32X or slower, or a different brand the only time it matters to speed is Installation of a program which don't happen all the time.

Kenwood are really fast but picky on burn CDs.
Creative are Loud.

no commends about Acer. ONly thing I heard is it's heavy. (?)
