Here are my priorities...

Load fast and accurate,
Read CDR's,
Play audio CD's,
Quiet drive

What are important things for me to consider in an IDE drive?

Fast "access time"?
Large "transfer rate"?
Low "error rate"?
Forget about all the above, and go with "Editor's Choices"?

If you want to get a good cdrom drive, check out toshiba. Fast and reliable, fast cdr reading (not picky of media), fast DAE. The only thing they lack is digital out. That's when their Dvd drives come in.

I had the following drives:
Kenwood TrueX 42x - Fast + quiet, cd-r compatibility really bad, no hope for cd-rw support

Aopen 36x - Fast, can be real loud, cd-r reading "ok", cd-rw is "ok"; little slow on cd-r's and rw's.

Acer 36x - I really don't know, it was a fast drive, lasted me 1 month and died.

My creative reads everything, except dvd's. I never had any trouble reading burned cd's or priated cd's (humm not that I have any).

I have an ASUS DVD which is not a CD-Rom drive I know. But Asus make good drives! Even though they are well known for their mobos hey make good stuff as well! My Asus DVD drive is reasonably quiet, gets abit louder when loading a CD or playing a game and it has to move the read head all over the place, but when playing audio and that you nearly forget it is there! It is soooo quiet! And it is reasonaly priced! I got my one from Hong Kong which is chipped so I can play any DVD film I want. But thats just stuff you get from Hong Kong...

Good Luck and hope you choose the right CD-Rom!!

I've got a good Asus 40X right now. But spin-up is slow. It's been a good drive, but I've got cash and can't really think of anything else right now that I'd want. I figured a CD-ROM drive wouldn't set me back too much.
And maybe It would curb my hardware appetite for a while :)
StorageReview is singing the praises of the Kenwood 72X, all but it's CD-RW performance.

My computer at work has a 52x Creative. Worst drive I have ever used. Stay away from Creative! I'll have to second Toshiba again..both their cd-roms and dvd-roms. Quiet, fast, and reliable.

Kenwood's 72x is an excellent drive. I owned a 52x, and it sucked real bad. That being said, I recently sold my 72x and am now using a Toshiba 48x.

The Toshiba 48x is also a top-notch drive. I'd recommend that one, over any other CD-ROM.

Like I posted "quiet" is last on my list of priorities. I've had a couple of slower Toshiba drives. And they did seem to be trouble free.
If I venture into the world of DVD drives, what compromises are made by going to that format instead of a straight up CD-ROM drive?
In the DVD drive world, are the "quality players" (participants not drives), the same as in the CD-ROM world? Or do different manufacturers shine there?

Aother vote for Toshiba. My 6X/32X drive is really quiet. Damn people seem to love Toshibas.
