CD-ROM Drive Reader problems...

The following is a perfectly repeatable problem between an AOpen 48X CD-ROM reader (brand new, ATAPI) and an IBM 300PL series machine (model 6562, a P233MMX with Intel HX chipset). I've tried about 10 different drives and 10 different computers, with the same result.

When I try to boot from the cD-ROM, I get the following error message:

Starting Windows 98...
Device driver not found: 'OEMCD001'
No valid CDROM device drivers selected

Bummer. So I used the disk included with the CD-ROM reader and followed the exact instructions to install vanilla DOS drivers on a bootdisk. And I get the following error when I boot to the bootdisk:


Version : V510
Device : IDECD000
Chipset : 82371SB (PIIX3)
No drives found, aborting installation


Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

did you try booting off a plain vanilla win98 boot disk (the kind you can make under the add/remove programs screen?). when it boots off the disk, just choose good 'ole #2 (boot with cd-rom support). i'd be curious to know if it finds the cd-rom with this method

Yes, I've tried that. Actually, the first error message above is the result of attempting to boot to a "plain vanilla Win98 CD".

It can't seem to find the drive...

Interestingly, I've done some more testing and I've discovered that:

1. The CD-DRIVE (Aopen 48X) works in every other system I've tried
2. Every other CD-DRIVE (not Aopen 48X) has worked in the IBM system...

Any thoughts now?
