This is windows XP SP2.

I installed a brand new memorex burner. It gets regognized in the bios properly, it's on it's own cable but in device manager it lists the drive correctly but with a yellow ! and of course there is no access to it in my computer.

I tried downloading a driver for it from driverguide but it didn't work, still has the same thing in the device manager.

I'm pretty sure this is happening with any cd rom drive that is put into the computer, if that helps.

I would think the drivers in Windows XP SP2 would be adequate for the new drive. Have you gone into device manager, right clicked on the drive and had it uninstall the drive and then booted again? If for some reason the embedded driver for the drive is corrupt this should fix it on bootup. Not much of a suggestion, but it is what I would do next if I had the problem you describe.

Yep, I did that too, as far as my understanding goes any cd rom drive should work right away with windows XP which is why I figure there is something wrong with the XP install which is why I'm going to have to reinstall it. I would spend more timing looking for an answer but unless someone has the answer I'm just going to backup and reinstall.

I'd still be interested if there is a fix for this besides reinstalling windows but, I reinstalled windows and now the cd rom drive is being regognized without a problem.
