CD rom Drive not working...floppy too.

Since this forum seems to have people who really know the in's and outs of computers I thought I'd ask. I came home from work and sat down to play a game on my Athlon Thunderbird running Win 98. I inserted a cd into my drive and it wouldn't read it. "the Drive is not accessible" I tried another disk. "the Drive is not accessible" and so on and so on. Every CD I try, the drive says that the drive is not accessible. I see some activity on the cd rom drive since the light flickers and the device manager says it's working fine. I've tried to reconnect the cables and power supply, but haven't had any luck. my computer can't read any cdroms at all. I haven't really installed anything on the computer and used it the previous day just fine. So I'm reaslly stumped as to why the cd rom drive would stop reading cd's.

I set my Bios to boot off of the cd rom, and it sticks there when the win 98 cd is in it. The light is on on the drive, but it will not advance to setup until I open the drive up and take out the cd. At that point the computer will start up.

I also noticed a few days later that the Floppy drive thinks all floppies need to be reformatted. The computer runs fairly well other than that. I remember reading in a forum a while ago about a similar problem, so I'm wondering if anyone can help. I'm stumped.

Thanks.

btw. this happened from a working configuration. powered off...12 hours later powered on. worked at night. didn't work next day:disgust:

Nope, it's not dirty, I wish it was. I was reading that there are some sort of problems with the ECS mainboard recognizing the CDrom drive, but I can't find a way to bypass it.

Soooo incredibly frustrating.
