I just bought a brand new creative labs 8438 cdrw. I burned one cd that worked fine. Tried to burn another later, but cdrw won't read the blank media. It just spins but never reads the blank disc! The weird thing is that the cd rom that came with the computer won't read them anymore!! I've tried adjusting the settings in device manager but none change anything. I am running Windows ME. The drives still read normal audio and data discs. The burning software is Nero Burn. What should I do? The 2 cd drives are ran off the same IDE cable. I have a single harddrive on the other ide cable. The computer is an eMachine 600is. I hope I didn't leave anything out. Please HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!

First thing you should do is move the burner or the reader to the other IDE cable so they are on different channels. Try doing this and see how the system runs afterword.

It could be the media that is bad. Did you try putting a different blank CD into your burner? Also, what did you mean by "the cd rom that came with the computer won't read them anymore!!" Read the first CD that you burned? Finally, are you trying to burn to CD-R's or CD-RW's? I had a problem once where the CD-RW didn't erase correctly, so the burner spun it constantly until I shut the power down...

It was the cheap cdr media that wouldn't work with the cdrw. I took it back and got the 8x HP Burner. It reads all the media that I throw at it. I tried Office Depot disks, Memorex disks, and some others. The media that it did not play was the kind with the greenish dye. The blueish dye media worked fine as well as cdrw's. I'm sorry, but I find the Creative Labs burner a very poor burner if they want you to buy the "expensive" media only. Kudos to Hp for using all kinds of media. Anybody looking for a cd burner, stay away from the Creative Labs model (8x model that is, don't know about the 12x model).
