CD-ROM/Burner and DMA

Here's a (hopefully) quick and easy question:

If I have both a CD-ROM and a burner on the same IDE controller (CD-ROM as master) and turn on DMA for the CD-ROM but NOT for the burner, does the burner still utilize DMA? The techs at HP were telling me this is the case, but I have never heard of that before. Does the burner use DMA, even if I am not using the CD-ROM to burn (ie. burning from the hd)? Does this mean that in order to use DMA on my CD-ROM, I should put the burner on its own controller?

The reason I haven't is because I never burn from CD to CD so I didn't think it would make much difference if both were on the same controller (was more convenient that way).

Thanks in advance,

Put the Burner as the Master(DMA) followed by the CDROM...and yes use the same IDE port.

So, are you saying that if the burner is the master with no DMA, then it won't use DMA, even if the CD-ROM (as slave) does have DMA checked?
