CD ROM Buggin' Me

Hi All,

My cd rom pretty much stopped working last week. I've searched these forums and have found similar subjects, but not exactly. I tried 2 different cd drives, both have the same problem. The drives are both recognized in the BIOS, I can eject the disks from the properties box, but they won't read the data. I put a cd in, the light flashes, it seems like it starts to read, then the light goes solid and all activity stops. This has happened on 2 different drives.

I assume since the BIOS sees the drive, it's not the IDE cable or controller (set as master on secondary channel). Since the light changes colors and flashes, it's not the power plug.

What am I missing? Any and all help appreciated. Thanks all.

have you tried hooking up the cd-roms on a different ide controller? (primary instead of secondary or vice versa)

I ran PC Wizard 2005 and when checking the event logs, I came across this error,"Type : Error, Source : Cdrom, Description : The device, \Device\CdRom0, has a bad block". Can anyone tell me what this means? Thanks.

It means the Cd-rom couldn't read data off the CD, or it's getting courpted. I would suggest using an 80 conductor cable w/ your Cd-rom and deleteing the 2ndary IDE controler from the Device manager and letting windows re-rec. your 2ndary IDE channel and it's attached devices. (I've had similar issues in the past and letting windows redetect the IDE channel resolved them.)
