Cd Rom and DVD Rom Issues

My optical drives are acting weird. They freeze up on loading programs. They are very very slow. The drives will try to continue reading a disk even after it has been removed. It seems that if the file are small on the disk it can read it fine. Just finished building this unit and I have some programs I would like to load. The ones I have loaded I had to transfer the files to a usb drive to load. The Operating system is Windows 8.1 the motherboard is Asus Z87 Deluxe/Quad, processor i4077 3.5 Gigs, 32 MB of DDR3 MB, Western Digital HD Veloc-Raptor 500 Gig. As I recall back when Windows Vista came out I had a similar problem that I finely resolved or Microsoft fixed it in an update. Any help would be appreciated. I have checked all cable which are ok, I install a new Optical drive and neither fixed the problem.

How many optical drives does this system have? You said plural. If so, does this happen with both drives? Have you tried unplugging one at a time from the board? If the issue remains, try using a different mobo port for it, making sure that controller is on.

Is yr firmware up to date?

One Asus 12X BD-ROM and one Buffalo USB Bluray writer. Yes both drives acting the same. No firmwares for either drive. Yes I removed the Buffalo drive from the system no difference.

What do you mean, "no firmwares for either drive"?

Have you tried uninstalling the Asus drive and reinstalling it? How does it show up in device manager? Have you tried to update the drivers?

Have you tried hooking it up to a different SATA port on yr board?

So far, this feels like a firmware issue to me.

Pls provide the exact model number of yr ASUS blu ray drive.

Make sure you are not plugging your drives into the Asmedia SATA ports, as they are only for hard drives.

If you are not, or the problems persists, update to the latest Intel Chipset Drivers (released 9/30/13).

If you are still having issues, make sure you are running the latest BIOS, 1707.

May the Cybergod Bless Ketchup79.()🙂

I never had an Asus mobo, or Asmedia SATA ports.🙂 Nor did I ever work on a friend's system having any optical drive issues. EVER.

Was it DMA back in the Vista days? EDIT: Looks like DMA has been defaulting to ON since before Vista so I guess that wouldn't be it.

I really appreciate your help. I'm confused, now let me get this right. My Hard Drives should be plugged into the Brown Asmedia connectors (4 ea), and any Cd Rom drives I have now in the future should be plugged into the Yellow connectors (6 ea). I have 3 hard drives one for operating system , etc. I have 2 I want to create a Raid drive for my video editing.
I have updated my Bios 1707. I have updated chipset drivers.

Thanks again so much for your help. I decided to install windows 8.1 all over again and was able to load all the drivers and other files off the motherboard support disk after which everything worded great, I also moved all the Hard drives to the yellow connector and was able to make a Raid 0 with my two other drives.
