cd repair

I have a cd that is scratched to the point of not being able to read some files. What repair kit is the best? Or doesn't it matter? I bought one cheap kit but I lost in somewhere in this house and I'll need to go buy another. As soon as I get it repaired, I'm burning a dup of it.

what i am going to say is totally a "risk", so there is absolutely no garantee, and i take no responsibility.

put 1 tiny drop of cooking oil on the disk, and use a soft paper (just something that doesn't scratch the cd even more) to wipe the drop of oil all over the disk. basically just need a very thin layer of greese on the CD. this can make the cd "smoother"

I have tried this once and it worked (though have to clean up the cdrom a bit afterwards), but again, NO GARANTEE. and if you try it, DO NOT put TOO MUCH greese. a bit will do. if it doesn't work, than more oil won't help.

I have also heard that you can use toothpaste on a scratched cd, just be sure to make sure that you wipe it off from the center of the disc to the edge. DO NOT wipe in a clockwise or counterclockwise motion. There are also devices out there that can repair CDs, but I havent seen one in quite a while. I dont believe that they are that expensive though, if you have a lot of CDs to repair, it may be worth the money (under $50) I think.
