This is a 12/3/01 review done by c|net. I know it's not exactly the kind of hot deals you may be want to see, but I feel this is very valuable for many if not most people. There are some valuable gems of advice. For instance, don't put your cds with label side down. That side is actually more vulnerable. It also mentions some brands that make their own cds, like Fuji and Maxell.

But now I'm worried about hundreds of disks (everything I burn) that have Sharpie permanent marker writing on them ... perhaps re-archiving some key files would be wise ...

if you buy name brand cdrs, most of them are painted or with the company logo and such. generic are more fragile, often having no coating of paint over the reflective (top) surface. some surfaces are resistant to scratches and peeling, others are real fragile. spend the few extra bucks to get some name brand cdrs. using a marker is ok as it's not in direct contact with the reflective layer. and you know the cdr disc is painted if you cant see through it in the light. i lost a few cds with cheap generics i bought over ebay because the reflective layer peeled off and got scratched real easily. i still have a few cdrs from 4yrs ago that still work well that i've used markers on. also if you have coasters try scraping the top with a paper clip or something, if it has a painted top you'll find it is really resistant to scratches and unless you apply enough force, which would only happen if it were intentional, it would scratch. just my .02

Cool stuff--but I spotted a few mistakes there at first glance about who manufactures what. Also their discussion about the Sony discs didn't really explain what was going on with the wavelength of the laser light, the organic dyes and the reflectivity.

ive been using thin point sharpies to labels cds for the past 5 years or so. even the oldest still work perfectly...

I tried looking for them but they're pretty expensive, and difficult to find. Like the article said, it may be easier to find an oil-based felt-tip marker.

Thanks Tsee. I enjoyed the review. I always thought the bottom of the CD was the side to be real careful with.

I got a TDK marker with a burner i bought from them. I'm going to continue to assume it's fine for marking CDR.. hehe
