CD-R questions :D

I just got me a LiteOn 40125S, flashed it fine to 48125W, which increased my average writing speed from 31X to 37X.
It came with Nero 5.5.9.0 bundled.

My old burner was a 4X HP 8100, so all these technologies this liteon incorporates, are new to me,
that's why I wanted to see if anyone could answer these questions :)

1) Overburn: how much extra space can I fit on a 80min cd? The test-program from nero said 1:57, but that's
only 17 MB, how do I burn movies that are above 717MB in size, I have a lot of those!

2) What is smart-burn, and what are the advantages of enabling/disabling it?

3) What is smart-X?

4) Can anybody advise me a good CD-brand, which are capable of high burning speed (preferably 48X),
but cheap too? For example some of the brands from www.billigmedien.de

Hope I can have the answers for at least some of these questions :D

1) Go to File > Preferences > Expert Features - then enable Overburn, you can specify how much or how little.

2) Smartburn automatically checks media quality and maximum write speed to ensure correctly written media, enabling it will make sure most of your burns are perfect, disabling it won't, but may be a little bit faster(less than 20 seconds)

3) Smart-X supports up to 48X speed Digital Audio Extration (DAE) and high speed VCD data extraction

Edit: oops, forgot #4..it's hot here

4) Check www.newegg.com - memorex, tdk, pny, and fuji are all high quality media..I would say away from brand like Great Quality, HI Val, crappy name brands.

lol A little impatient, are we? You haven't even waited for 2 hours yet. Wait at least 24 hours for a response before you give up, some people here have better things to do than sit in front of their computer 24/7 hitting refresh so they can answer questions as soon as they appear. Remember, patience is a virtue :D

[EDIT: And there ya go :)]

yeaop but when the topic gets to old to be on the frontpage, it isn't noticed anymore..

can't imagine anyone would scroll several pages back to answer my questions =)

-thanks Furor 8) - overburn, maybe I can specify that it should burn 900MB on a cd, but that
doesn't mean it would actually burn that much!!?!

Go to this site and search in the forumns for 'overburning'. There are alot of message threads about overburning. Nero seems to be particularly troublesome...from what I read, it wants a 90 second leadout at the end of the data, which basically wastes most of the extra space you gained from overburning in the first place...go and read. I don't use overburning, nor do I understand it enough (yet) to help you per se.

1. You will not be able to put too much extra on a cd cause there are only so much space, so you might get 82mins if you're lucky, but I would expect between 81-82mins. If you want larger capacity cds for your pr0n.. I mean movies ;) then try to look for some 90 or 99min cds. They will let you burn from 790-870Megs (if the drive supports the 90 or 99min media, and I think the Liteon does support both). If that's not enough space for you, then I suggest you get a DVD burner.

2. Smart burn is the "burn protection" that Liteon uses and it's advisible to use it cause Liteon only incorporates 2megs buffer so you will get buffer over run more easily.

3. Smart X is where the software picks the best possible speed that it thinks the cd media can handle. If it's rated for a certain amount, the drive may keep it there or raise or lower it depending on quality of the media.

4. Right now there is no media that will burn 48x safely (read: coasters) everytime. Your best bet is to wait til they release a newer firmware cause the 48x drives that they have are not very reliable and there's been issues. If you want to burn the fastest, then don't go above 40x right now until they release better media or until a better firmware comes out. I have the same burner as you and it is not really saving you any time by burning it at 48x, but it will give you a coaster probably most of the time or you will have a cd that is full of errors even when it says successful.

The best media to buy now is Tayio Yuden(sp?), Fugi (from Japan), Mitsubishi, and a few others. I would check out an article of the new 44x cdrw from Yamaha on CDRInfo site cause it has a run down on the fastest burners out now and if you check out the tests at above 40x burning, you will see pretty bad results.

Actually, I always scroll back to the last threads that I read from the previous day to make sure I see all the threads (although I certainly don't read anywhere near every thread), and I would imagine that most regulars at least scroll back 2-3 pages or continually check in through the day.

I also got my 40125S flashed to 48125W. TY's Fuji is what I use to burn at 48x. The Fuji media were on sale at BestBuy last week for like $5 in a 50 pack spindle after rebate.

hehe will check if I can buy those in Denmark, or germany....

- is smart-burn enabled automatically? because I burned windows xp with 48X yesterday,
on the LITEON CD-R that came with the burner.. it didn't adjust the speed or anything, it
took me 2:25 to burn the whole CD.
