CD-R media problem. 16x certified CD's only working at 8X ? + DMA(or ultra) question.

1. Hi, untill now I had memorex 16 X 80 min cd's that I used with my Sony 16-10-40 drive at 16 X speed with NO problem. I burned a total of 20 cd's. Now, my friend got to my house last day with a pack of SONY CD's also certified 16 X. We though SONY cd's would be even greater in a Sony drive. So, we burned 2 CD's and the two failed at 99 % just before finalising the cd at 16 X. THen, we tried one last time, but at 8 X and it worked. So we burned all the others at 8 X and it was ok.

Now, why is this ? Why are the Sony 16 X cd-r's not burning correctly at 16 X ?1😕

2. Now, an other question. On my secondary IDE channel, first device is at ULTRA DMA more while the second is only at DMA mode. WHats the difference ? Why aren't the two devices (DVD and CD-R) at ultra DMA mode ?

Are the SONY 16 X media known as high, medium or low quality ?
Personally, memorex and verbatim have been great with 0 errors till now.

Try different burning software. If you're using Adaptec CD, that may be the problem. Adaptec Easy CD could not burn at max speed on my drive. Try Nero Burning Rom.

As for the UDMA question, no CD[RW] drives take advantage of UDMA even if they support it because they don't move anything close to 33 MB/s. This is different from DMA, and DMA should be enabled in Windows for each drive, if possible.
 
while it's most likely a media problem, suggest that you check for a firmware update which may address this problem you're having!
btw were you copying on the fly??
 
Well, he had high quality voyager episodes (really nice ones ! "ENDGAME".. hehe) and I was burning from his HD. Is that what you mean burn on the fly ?
