CD-R certified media - 12x vs 16x

I just ordered a Lite-On 16x10x40 CD-RW drive and I after looking at my CD-R media inventory, I notice I have a 50-pk spindle of Imation 12x and a 50-pk spindle of Imation 16x. I have a hunch the media are essentially the same: the spindle marked 16x merely has newer packaging. Is this a good assumption or should I burn the 12x media at 12x only?

I think your assumption is right. Most likely when the Imations first came out with the 12X CD-R's, they couldn't test it at 16X since there were no drives that could do this. After the 16X writers came out, they probably tested the same CD-R's and certified them for the faster speed.

Try a couple of them at 16x, and if it fail use it at 12x.
Probably you won't notice a lot of speed improvement anyway.
I probably wouldn't try to use it above certified speed.

bacillus, I did a little research on the Lite-On and there are two potential "gotchas" with it: (1) its read performance on CD-RW discs is substandard, (2) its DAE extraction quality is not perfect (use sync mode to overcome this). Otherwise, the reviews look very good - the Lite-On has great seek speeds - and the price is amazing, really. The leading Plextor 16x10x40 drive costs $81 more at newegg and I simply don't see the added value of the Plextor, however great it may be.
