hello all,

i've been out of the loop for cd-r's for months now. can anybody recommend any good buys and sites?

thanks.

you SHOULD check General Hardware for this... but i have been using TDK media and Verbatim (spelling?) and they work always without a hitch!!!

gah  i dunno i say post where ever. but yeah you should check out TDKs media on newegg, good reviews. but i suppose it all depends on your setup (your burner, burning software, etc.)

Japanese-manufactured media in general is highly rated. I don't have much faith in cheap media any more either. Most recent experience was corruption on a disturbing number of Verbatim CD-R's manufactured by Moser Baer (India) less than one year after burn.

If you're shopping in a B&M, look for "Made in Japan" on the label, otherwise order from a reputable online source. There are supposedly fake Taiyos out there, so beware of shady online retailers.

Ritek/Ridata CD's and DVD's hold up well and have almost no coasters per roll, the cheapos are only good for temporary stuff

newegg sells them in bulk among other sites

I've used cheap no-name and name brand media, and haven't had a problem, regardless what type of media I've used.

Fuji.

You can't just buy Fuji blindly anymore. All Fuji used to be made in Japan TY's, so whereever you bought them you were golden. Now some retail Fujis are made in Taiwan junk. Make sure you read the label before buying them.

that's true. Actually there were always some Taiwanese Fuji spindles, but finding Japanese never seemed to be a big problem. Now their DVDR is supposedly going all Taiwan, no more Taiyos. Sucks.

From what I understand, all cd-rs are junk nowadays.KODAK used to make a gold cd-r, which has been discontinued. Plan on everything you copy , for at least 1/3 of it to be screwed up.I would make 2 copies just to be safe-on two different brands. I use maxell PRO-because it claims to be better quality and cratch resistant. Wal-mart carries them. I have also heard that Taiyo Yuden is a great brand, but ive had some bad experience with these, but it coulda been the recording.

I agree. The quality of recordable media has gone downhill.

Isn't the manufacturer more important as that's what you're really buying?

The best manufacturer of blank media is Taiyo Yuden.

I wouldn't buy the cheapest. I used to do that until some discs corrupted.

Do they get fingerprints on them that easily? I've got some cheapos now that fingerprint like a bitch and I hate it.

thanks all for the great advice. i use to use fujis non-stop. i wasn't aware of the manufacturer importance at that time but i'll be careful of that now. is there a good proggy to tell me what the manufacturer is?

and how come cd-r's are not super cheap these days? they all go around 20 cents these days (newegg) or am i just not looking in the right places? i remember best buy use to have great MIRs with 100 cake boxes.

Probably. I haven't had that problem tho, but I'm never eating anything when I handle discs.

Yeah, use CDRIdentifier to check out the discs in your drive. But the idea is to check before buying and only get the good stuff. Best bets: Either shop online from a merchant that guarantees Taiyo Yuden or buy Fuji. Look at the label of the Fuji spindles, the good ones say "Made in Japan" and the junk say "Made in Taiwan".

...Neither am I. 😕

I rarely if ever touch the discs top, but sometime I have to to slide it out of my wallet, and it get fingerprints smeared all over. I even tried washing my hands once right before handling a CD, no luck. 🙁

I like the ones that have some kind of logo or marking on the top because they have the coating on them and it doesn't get fingerprints on it.

thanks legend. is that the cheapest buy around right now for taiyo yuden? 25 cents per disc?

what about prodisc? is that a reliable manufacturer?
