CD-R backup made simpler?

I want to back up a number of files on my computer. One thing, my digital pictures, number 6 GB or so. Is there a way to just copy a file directory and have software automatically break it up into CD-R sized chunks of data (i.e. 700 MB or so) so that it will write the folder in multiple volumes?

Basically, I am asking if there is an easier way to make copies of these files than going in and adding up totals of files and folders so that they are less than or equal to the size of my CD-Rs.

Any suggestions?

lots of ways to do this, easiest way to do it w/o rebooting would be to take all your data, put it into a .rar file, and break that rar file up into 700mb chunks, then burn each one to CD... you would have something like backup.rar, backup.r01, backup.r02

actually thats a pretty crappy and time intensive way to do it, but it is a way...

WinRAR can take, say, a 5GB .rar file and split it up into .rar, .r01, .r02, etc. each of the same size, with the last file just taking up whatever space it needs. There's an option when making a .rar file that has "Split into volumes, bytes" and you would put in 700000 to make them 700MB

EDIT: the disadvantage I see to this compared to what you are are doing is this: If you want a single picture off a CD the way you do now, you find that CD and copy the picture over. If you want a single picture doing it the rar way, you have to copy every .rar, .r01, etc. file over to your hard drive, decompress it all (which would take a while), then you get the picture you want.

well the purpose of this is backup, so if i ever have to use these CDs it is going to take a while and be a hassle anyway. so i figure the RAR way is the way to go then?

Hopefully someone can offer a quicker/less dirty way to do it, but if i had a lot of data i wanted spanned across CDs, and the only reason I would get that data back off of those CDs is if everything was lost, then that's the way i would do it.

The latest Nero and Easy CD Creator have backup functions for folders.
